VINCENT RUSSO

Western Hognose Snakes

I am currently working with Albino Western Hogs, Red Westerns, Green Westerns & Yellow Western Hognose snakes. All are prolific Mouse Feeders and Produce Large Clutches of Eggs ( up to 20 ). Strong Healthy Captives.

Albino Hognose

Heterodon nasicus
Albino Western Hognose

This recessive trait started about 20 years ago from a single wild collected male Albino that was dropped off at Dwane Richards Texas Pet Shop. The rest is History. The Albino Hognose is one of the most spectacular Albinos in the colubrid world. They stay small ( about 24 inch for females & 14" for males ) and do quite well on defrosted rodents in Captivity. The Albino gene is an excellent ingredient to add to some of the other morphs of Western Hognose. I still beleive that we are only seeing the tip of the iceburgh in Hognose snakes & that with selective breeding we can intensify the colors we see in Albino Hogs. We are currently working on Red Albinos - Snow Albino  - Sunglow & even produced a Paradox Albino.

My Albino bloodlines have been outcrossed into my large Robust Mouse feeding Normal bloodlines. Making the Hets I Produce some of the Hardiest around. Prices will be based on looks, overall color & bloodlines.

Update July 09: We hatched some outstanding outcrossed Albinos & Hets with great Orange color. Even the hets have great color.

Heterodon Nasicus
Hypomelanistic Western Hognose Snakes

Hypomelanistism ( Lacking Black ) is another rare recessive trait within the Western Hognose complex. This trait is quite uncommon in collections & was started by Dwayne Richard ( the person that started the Albino Western Hognose ). When combined with other traits - the sky is the limit. The Hypos we are working with are beautifull hogs with amazing colors. Their bellies are pink & white with hues of lavender. A very under rated trait & also very hard to come by. We anticipate selling some male hets in Summer 2008.

Heterodon nasicus
Axanthic Western Hognose Snakes

Axanthic ( lacking yellow ) is probably the rarest of the recessive traits in Western Hognose snakes. This trait is a magnificent ingredient to create new & exciting hognose morphs. With the popularity of Albino - this new gene will be the key to creating the "Snow". It also can be combined with the Hypo gene to create a "Ghost" Hognose ( which has not been done yet ). We are working on our own line of Axanthic that popped up serendipitously in a clutch from a normal pairing we did a few years ago. The Axanthics from this line are strong rodent feeders & prolific breeders. We anticipate selling some hets in 2008 & maybe an Axanthic or two.

Update August 08 : Snows hatched & we may have a poss het or two for sale.

Update July 09: Axanthics & Hets hatched & we anticipate selling a few Hets and a limited number of Axanthics. Serious Inquiries please.

Red Hognose

Heterodon nasicus
Red Western Hognose

The red western Hogs I have are truly RED in color. The origin of this bloodline is not known. But they are from an Albino project that I have been working with for quite some time now. I originally purchased a pair of Het Albino Red hogs and bred them to eachother & other Red looking hogs. The results are unbeleivable with the Red Albinos being the most outrageous Albino Hogs anywhere. I have kept all the Albinos produced from this bloodline & expect to atart selling RED Albinos in 2006. Click the links below for pics of Reds & Albino Reds.

Update July 2009 - Reds Het Albino & Albino Reds have hatched and will be ready to go soon.

Bill Love was up at my place this Spring ( 2008 ) & took some great shots of my Hogs. All of Bills shots have his Blue Chameleon Logo on them.

Hognose

Heterodon nasicus
Western Hognose snakes

I am working with a nice group of Normal Western Hogs. Most of these Normals were used to create Heterozygous offspring from my Albino projects. These hognose snakes are Hardy Captives and make desirable Pets. Best of all is the fact that they stay small and max out at about 24 + inches. The Hogs I used to start my colony are robust mouse feeding females & males ( making their offspring jump started pinky feeders ). My large females average 15 - 20 eggs in a clutch. The normal I sell will be well started pinky mouse feders.

Heterodon simus
Southern Hognose Snake

Southern Hognose snakes are quite rare in captivity ( and the wild too ). I have a beautiful group of young adults that produce some awsome looking babies each year. The adults I have are very colorful with alot of pink on their tops & beautiful beige & gray markings on the sides. These southerns have taken to rodents quite well & the hatchling require little coaxing to get them to eat pinky mice. This race of hognose is very underated & the reason for this may be the fact that they are still not common in the Pet Industry as of yet. They are very small as adults & a large female is about 200 grams and less than 20 inches. Full grown males are almost half that size. These sell out very fast each year. Kindly contact me in June - July for availability.

Font Size =3>Heterodon kennerlyi
Mexican Hognose Snakes

The Mexican Hognose is not as common in the Pet Trade as the Western Hognose. As a matter of fact it is very rare to find Captive bred & born kennerlyi - anywhere. It is a valid subspecies with a few noticeable differences from the western hog. They have a more pointed rostril and a very unique pattern with double spots down theit backs. Their color is very different and they almost look grey to cream with a pink/rose colored belly that is speckled with some black. These rare hognose also have different habits from the western hognose in that they are summer breeders instead of spring breeders. I have eggs hatching from these up until Late October. A rare find in the hobby and mine come from an oustanding line of hogs from South Texas. A very small number of these will be available each Fall.
