Reptiles of Costa Rica

All of these photos were taken in the Jungles of Costa Rica ( unless otherewise noted ) by me. Costa Rica has the richest concentration of Herps anywhere in the World. Thanks to our trusty Guide Adrian, we were lucky enough to see such beautiful creatures. If you would like to Visit Costa Rica to see these creatures, kindly contact This Guide:

Croc Closeup

This shot was take with My digital Camera. It was placed against the lens of a powerful Bird Watching scope.

Crocs

My Guide said to me " tommorow we will go see some Crocodiles ! ". I looked at my wife and said " he really means Caiman - there are no Crocs in Costa Rica ". But when we got there my jaw hit the ground. They really were Crocs - And lots of them - BIG ones. They are American Crocs. They are native to Central America and America.

Yellow Eyelash Viper
If these guys werent Venomous - I would have 100 of them.
Its amazing that such a vibrantly colored snake can become invisible amongst the Jungle Growth.

Big Water Fall
WOW, Breathtaking!!!

Tico " Adrian "
In Costa Rica they call men Ticos.
This is my new Tico friend, Adrian.
He was our Trusty guide for 6 days.
He knew all the great spots for Reptiles & Birds.

Butterfly
Costa Rica is Famous for its Butterflys.

Humming Bird
Hummingbirds were evey where.

Tortuguero
Tortuguero is the second wettest place in the world with over 250 inches of rain per year.

Coati
There were troops of up to 30 of these guys.

Brown Basilisk Female

Brown Basilisk Male
Look at the crest on this guy.
Basilisks were every where.

Fer De Lance
This poor thing was cut in half by a local farmer.
They think that these snakes kill their livestock.
I disagree. It was hard to explain to these people that they should try to relocate instead of Kill them.
I dont think they understand that they may be knee deep in Rats if they keep killing snakes.

Iguanas Females
It was the coolest thing to see Iguanas in the Wild.
They were huge.

Iguana Male
This guy was over 6 feet long.
There was always one Big Male Inguana in the trees.
With a bunch of females.

Frog Eggs
These eggs are that of the Red Eye Tree Frog.
They lay them on the underside of a leaf that is hanging over water. The Tadpoles then fall in the water when they hatch.

Red Eye Tree Frog
We saw many Red Eyes in Tortuguero.

Cat Eyed Snake
This snake was found by my wife.
It was in Palm tree and had just eaten a Red Eye Tree Frog.

Monteverde Eye Lash Viper
This Eyelash Viper was photoed in a tree at about 6 feet off the ground. Everyone walked by it. But I was last in the group and stopped to enjoy the scenery when I noticed this guy looking at me. What great Luck.

Monteverde Cloud Forest BOA
This Boa was captured in the Monteverde Cloud Forest of Costa Rica. It was owned by Victor H. Quesada of the Monteverde Serpentarium.
This Boa was found at over 4000 feet above sea level. The Cloud Forest was very cold at night ( as low as 55 degrees ).

Boa
This is a beautiful Costa Rican imperator. The photo was taken in Serpentarium.
